- “I Guess This Is My Life” is a B-side that was left off Monster-0’s previous album, Don’t Worry About the World.

- “Mother Forever” is about Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria.

- House of Love, mentioned in “I Work for You,” is one of Daemon’s favorite Brit Pop bands.

- “Ryan Writes Plays” is named after Daemon’s friend Ryan Colwell. He lives in New York and really does write plays. This song was used in the soundtrack for one of them.

I’m proud to unveil my latest release, a five song Monster-0 EP called Monster-0 Works for You. My Monster-0 stuff has always been a mix of rock and electronica, but now that I’ve started releasing my electronica tracks as daemon I’ve been focusing more on the rock stuff with Monster-0. here is something Ryan Geddes and i put together back in October 2008. i wasn't ever sure what to do with it, so i figured i might as well put it out there. Geddes and i wanted to make an old school electro breakdance track based around the refrain "Synthotronic sounds/Going downtown." Daemon Fan Interview

Listener Alex Rakowski recently interviewed me about my latest album, Background Processes, for a school project and was kind enough to let me reproduce it here. Please to enjoy:

Alex Rakowski: When did you become a musician?

Daemon: I always had a knack for singing and started performing in musicals early in elementary school. Around third or fourth grade my parents got me a Yamaha keyboard for Christmas and I started writing little tunes and playing along with the built-in drum machine. From then on I would bore my family to death every Christmas Eve with hour-long performance pieces.

Alex: What made you become a musician?

Daemon: My dad is hardcore into music. He taught me how and why to love it. He’s not a musician himself, just a music lover to the extreme. That and playing with his grandkids are pretty much what he lives for. To this day he is more into the indie music scene than I am and is always turning me onto new bands. Right now I’m listening to a CD he just burned me of Bonnie “Prince” Billy.

Alex: While you are a solo act for the most part, do you ever collaborate with other musicians?

Daemon: I often wish I had a band to share the burden with. An indie band today needs to do a lot more than just write tunes – they need to market, promote, and distribute them, too. As a solo act, I have to do all of that junk. But the fact is I don’t often meet people who are both talented and motivated. It’s pretty easy to find people who have one or the other quality, but in my experience having both is rare. I also much prefer working with friends as opposed to some stranger from a Craig’s List ad. When I can pull in a friend to help me out I don’t hesitate. Back when I was living in Chicago on old friend who is also a great drummer lived there, too, and I got him to play shows with me and perform on my first album.

Alex: Who are some of your inspirations?

Daemon: I have a wide variety of influences, which I hope is evident when listening to my music. I try not to record the same song twice and I want my albums to sound like a good mixtape. But just a few of my major influences would be Boards of Canada, Ladytron, and The Clash.

Alex: What was the inspiration for the new album, Background Processes?

Daemon: I love instrumental electronica in the style of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, or Squarepusher. To me, instrumental music can often be more powerful, emotional, and thought provoking than music with lyrics. However, I realize that most people want to listen to lyrics and sing along. Lyrics are how most people connect with music. So that’s something I’ve struggled with on my two Monster-0 records: I have instrumental stuff that I want to share but I’m trying to make it fit in with this pop/rock music. It made sense to start a side project (which I ended up calling daemon) through which I can release all my instrumental work. The response has been very positive, so I think I made the right decision.

Alex: You’ve mentioned in the past that some of the music on the album has been used in musicals and similar type events, can you elaborate on that a little?

Daemon: I come from a theatre background and have a lot of friends producing shows in Chicago and New York. Over the years they’ve asked me to compose pieces for their shows and I’ve compiled many of these works on Background Processes.

Alex: Also you work for one of the most popular video game sites on the Internet, IGN.com, true?

Daemon: This is true.

Alex: If given a chance to sign to a major record label, would you leave your job at IGN to pursue music?

Daemon: I’m not in any hurry to leave IGN, it’s kind of a dream job. Plus, pursuing a major label is kind of outdated. Major labels are offering less and less that bands can’t do on their own. So I’m perfectly happy playing games during the day and playing music at night.

Alex: What are your future plans?

Daemon: I plan to keep growing my audiences for Monster-0 and daemon and maybe start another side project or two. I’m really into both hip-hop and death metal, and I have lots of ideas for both genres. I’ve also started dipping my toes into composing for videogames, a venture that seems like a perfect fit for someone with my specific skill set.

New Album "Background Processes" Now Available!

Greetings, good people. It is with great pleasure that I can finally announce the release of my latest album, Background Processes. Instead of a Monster-0 release, this is a side project simply named “daemon.” Six years in the making, Background Processes is a collection of 25 songs I’ve been writing since 2003. It’s pretty different from the pop/rock stuff I produce as Monster-0. Instead, daemon is all relaxed, instrumental electronica with retro synths and lo-fi drum machines that should make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Some of these songs were commissioned for various theatre productions over the years; others haven’t been heard at all until now. All tracks were recorded in my bedrooms of Chicago and San Francisco.

Background Processes is 25 songs long for $10. Many of the tracks are rather short and I think the album works best as one piece to be listened to from start to finish. It’s now available as a CD and a digital download from CD Baby. CD Baby will feed it out to all other digital distribution platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, and eMusic, but that usually takes two to three weeks. The CD includes some very nice artwork created by my good friend David Adams.

Monster-0 Presents: Daemon

i am pleased to announce my next release, although it isn't a Monster-0 record. i've collected many of the instrumental electronica tracks i've recorded over the years onto one album, which i'm releasing under the name "daemon." the album is called Background Processes and it is 25 songs long.

this release has been a long time coming and i'm pretty proud of it. some of these tracks date back to 2003 and they all were recorded in my bedrooms in Chicago and San Francisco. it's a pretty mellow record full of melodic electronica, '80s synths, and lo-fi drum machines. a lot of the songs are fairly short, in the two minute range. it's meant to be taken as a whole and this will definitely be a case where it's more economical to get the full album rather than singles. it's $10 for 25 songs.

Max Fun Times

so i've written the music for my first videogame. clarification: i didn't make the game, i just provided the music and sound effects. it was a lot of fun, and definitely something i want to do more of in the future.

the game is called Max Fun Times, and it's a drinking game available now on Xbox Live Indie Games. it was developed by Claymerikorp, a shadowy new developer that not much is known about. the team contacted me via carrier pigeon because they needed the hot beats, and hot beats are my trade.

it's a fairly standard drinking game where you spin a wheel and have to do whatever the tiles tell you to do. the object is to get panda and, hopefully, land on the very special "Max Fun Times" tile. but the really cool aspect of the game is you can edit the tiles to say whatever you want. invite every girl you know over to your place, and change all the tiles to read "every girl in the room has to make out." the power is in your hands.

since this is a party game i tried to create a party atmosphere with a mix of hip-hop and electro tracks. here's what you hear at the title screen:

when you achieve "Max Fun Times," you're gonna want to get up and dance. so i created a little breakdance tune that plays whenever you land on this ultimate tile:

i also made all the incidental sound effects you hear in the game.

so Max Fun Times is now available on Xbox Live for 200 Points, the lowest amount a developer can charge for their game (at least it was the lowest amount when the game was submitted for approval). Claymerikorp would have preferred to release the game for free, but Microsoft has to put food on its table, you know? check out the game and let me know what you think.

New Song Didn't Pass the Girlfriend Test

i don't update this blog often enough. i'm going to try and change that by posting regular updates on what i'm working on, whether it's good or bad. today i'm sharing a recent failure of mine. sometimes you write a song, and after it's all recorded you sit back and listen to it and think, "wow, this sucks." this is one of those songs.

so the other day the idea for this track popped into my head while i was riding home from work on my scooter. the main melody came to me and kept repeating in my head. for some reason or another i thought it would be fun to make the song all about my favorite bands. if you are my Facebook friend, you may have seen my status update about working on this song. i suppose i thought it would be a good way to connect with listeners. if just one of these bands happened to also be a favorite of yours, maybe our bond would strengthen.

so i recorded the song as soon as i arrived home. didn't take too long -- a couple hours in all. the lyrics are nothing more than a list of my favorite bands, and the chorus merely repeats "these are a few of my favorite bands." easy, right? i tried to make it a light hearted, fun pop/rock song in the style of The Dandy Warhols, which i've been listening to a lot of lately.

but when i listened to the finished product, it didn't move me. sometimes i feel too close to a song to know if it's any good and seek a second opinion. so i played it for my girlfriend. "meh," she said. it is not a good sign when even your girlfriend doesn't like your song. turns out a list of my favorite bands does not necessarily make a compelling listen. she thought the melody was catchy, but needed a little more effort in the lyrical content.

so here is the song as it stands right now:

here's what i think went right:
- i've got a catchy melody and a solid chorus
- i like the crunchy, buzzy guitar tone
- i like the bridge that occurs at 1:52 (although i need to do more with it)
- i like the "whoo hoos!"

here's what went wrong:
- lyrics don't cut it
- guitar solo is weak sauce
- guitar part is inconsistent
- drums could use more personality

so there you have it. i'll probably scrap the vocals and write something with a little substance, then figure out exactly what the guitar should be doing. if i get another decent version going i'll post the update.

The Two Most Annoying Things About Facebook

i love Facebook as much as the next guy/gal. like the rest of the civilized world, i abandoned the MySpace ghetto long ago and now do my social networking exclusively on the 'Book. but there are two aspects of it i find aggravating. actually, these points aren't Facebook's fault, as they are user errors:

1. People who use photos of their kids for their profile pictures
dude, this is YOUR Facebook profile. are you really so devoid of a sense of identity that you have to stick your kid up there as your proxy? if i want to be friends with your baby, i'll send them a friend request.

2. People who don't understand the way status updates work
ok, gather around children. the Facebook status update is supposed to read like a sentence that begins with your name. for example, "Daemon Hatfield is going to the strip club." an astonishing number of people can't wrap their minds around this concept and instead end up writing something that doesn't make any sense, like "Daemon Hatfield At strip club."

just glancing at some recent status updates, here is what i'm talking about. names have been changed to protect the idiots:

Don't Worry About the World Commentary Track

i have around 4,000 songs in my iTunes library. it occurred to me recently that i could determine my favorite year for music by figuring out what year is best represented in my library. whatever year i have the most songs from must be my favorite year, right?

apparently, it is 2005.

Korg DS-10 Video Tutorial

over at IGN i recently reviewed the Korg DS-10 synthesizer for the Nintendo DS. it's a pretty cool little tool, but it can be complicated for anyone who isn't used to virtual synths. i put up a video tutorial to demonstrate just what this little guy can do. please to enjoy:

New CD Now Available!

Monster-0's second LP, "Don't Worry About the World," is now available! It's been a long time coming, but 11 new songs of drum machine love and heart-broken cyborgs are now available over at CDBaby. My good friend Ryan Geddes helped out a lot with this record and played some keen egg shaker on the last song. IGN designer Scott Senkowski provided the artwork. the record will be available to download from iTunes soon, but for now those that still prefer physical objects can get the real world disc ($10).

Monster-0 Presents: Don't Worry About the World

my second full-length, to be released sooner than later, will be called Don't Worry About the World. i just handed it off to the mastering engineer who is hard at work getting it to sound as choice as possible. as soon as he's finished (which could be as early as later this week) i'll post song samples on myspace. until then, here's what the track list looks like:

New Album is Done!

at least my part is. i've finished recording, but it still needs to be professionally mixed and mastered. the next step is to shop it around to a few appropriate labels to see if anyone wants to put it out. if not, i'll go ahead and release it myself like the last LP. i think it's my best work so far, though, and i can't wait for you to hear it. 11 songs. some electro pop, some rockers, and a couple more thoughtful pieces.

SF Bands: Avoid BrainWash

dude, you do not want to play there. the BrainWash website is totally misleading about what equipment they have. plus, the band is expected to set up what busted ass equipment you can find in their dark closet that doesn't have a light. the staff is no help at all. if you have your own PA system you can make it work, but be prepared to deal with a bunch of assholes. best to just avoid the whole mess.

lots of people have been asking me for music recommendations lately, especially for dance stuff. luckily i just discovered this new site called Muxtape. it lets users upload mp3s onto their own mixtape page and share them with the universe. i've created a DaemZero mixtape of new stuff i've been listening to and some old favorites. there are only nine songs on there now, but i'll add more soon.

welcome to the new Monster-0 blog. in this age of myspace and free blogs, it just doesn't make sense to pay for web hosting and operate a site i have neither the time nor the talent to manage well. so, instead of www.monster-0.com, you'll be able to find all Monster-0 updates right here.

speaking of updates, i have a new song to share with you. i'm about half way done with a proper, new full-length album, and this is just a little taste. it's called "let's say our goodbyes."

oh, i should take this opportunity to remind folks that my name is pronounced monster "zero," not monster "oh." Monster-0 is one of the monsters from the old Godzilla flicks.

in other news, against my better judgement, i'm turning 30 this saturday. because these milestones are passed more successfully with friends and alcohol, i'm having a little get together on January 31. it will be at the Space Gallery in downtown San Francisco, 1141 polk st. i'll also be playing a Monster-0 dj set that night. festivities start at 8:30. if you're in the bay area, by all means please join us.
